Dear Editor,
With the global focus more urgent on a shift towards green technologies and climate change, and with certain few in government, seemingly advocating to take climate change urgently and getting rewards for it; as a country, we have to convert all the speeches on these subject matters into actual implementation of policies.
It is a delight to see in places like Providence some residential buildings that appear to come straight out of the coveted Architectural Digest magazine, however development in such areas is speeding up, and what is sure to happen in one or two years, are areas that transform into downtown Georgetown; congested, tightly packed and an eye sore.
Providence and every upcoming and developing housing scheme should also have plots of land allocated to those areas to be developed into horticultural miniparks, with gazebos, benches, including walking/jogging paths for our healthy development. To have such areas developed and maintained by the government in the long run will be a failure. A recipe for a disaster. To fast track this concept, final year UG students should design and develop these areas, with funds allocated by the government. (Think outside the box). All and any residents in these specific areas should be in charge of the entire upkeep in these spaces. It is an undisputed fact that the residents in these areas come with a wide range of personal abilities and interests; and can maintain these areas in perpetuity. We can’t keep making the same shortsighted failing decisions concerning urban and land development – Year in, year out.
Guyana is a small country, with relatively few selections of outdoor relaxation areas. Why not have “green” areas within our own living communities to go to. Talk is talk and cheap when it comes to advocating for climate change and modern urban development in Guyana, but we have to walk the walk as well – if we really want long lasting change.
Yours truly,
Chi Kansi
