“As a young entrepreneur I feel as though myself along with other young entrepreneurs are prime examples in society that we can create income for ourselves, despite age. No matter how big or small, we can be independent and make a living doing something on our own.”

Kaieteur News – Hoping to one day open up a salon of her own, 20-year-old Shamaine Grace Yokum, the founder and owner of ‘Act Natural GY,’ a local beauty and hair business, is on a mission to uplift both men and women by helping them to embrace their “roots.”
Our featured entrepreneur shared that it was through her own natural hair journey that she got the inspiration to venture into the business arena. The ‘Act Natural’ brand, which is already trending on our local social media platforms, was birthed last December, a few months after the global pandemic reached our shores. “Soon after my big chop from relaxed to natural in February 2019, I immediately fell in love with natural hair, not just mine but every curl, coil, and kink I laid eyes on,” young Yokum stated. She added that from then on most of her time was spent researching, gathering information about natural hair, products and the effects that would align with what she needed to know in order to kick start her legitimate business. From there, she explained that she started to make her own products due to the fact that it was hard sourcing the products needed for her hair. But what pushed her creativity into the business side? She said it was the support and feedback she received from family and friends who also tried some of her products. This, she said, gave her the motivation to do more. “They are the foundation of my support, my family and close friends have been there from the birth of Act Natural and has seen the growth,” the 20-year-old related with pride.
What makes her brand stands out too, is that this young woman tries to keep her products original and unique. It is a business where products are formulated to suit just about any hair type. When asked about the future of her business, Yokum mentioned that she is looking at expanding by producing more products not only for hair but for body and skincare. Also, she plans on opening a salon where persons of all hair type and ethnicity, can come and have “their crown examined and given the care that it specifically needs to glow and flourish.” As grateful as she is for the support thus far, the young woman pointed out that keeping her business going has not been without challenges. According to her, sourcing the ingredients and packaging products are some of the challenges, which she continues to face. During the early parts of the pandemic, to get her business on to another level, she used the opportunity to learn new skills and improve on her creativity. She confided too, that operating in the pandemic has not been easy. She nevertheless, assured that all protocols are observed. On the topic of the pandemic, she thinks that in order to boost small businesses during this time, relevant authorities should host virtual expos where young entrepreneurs can showcase their businesses in a safer and controlled environment. She believes that entrepreneurs such as herself, despite being young, are showing society that they too have what it takes to be independent. “As a young entrepreneur, I feel as though myself along with other young entrepreneurs are prime examples in society that we can create income for ourselves, despite age. No matter how big or small, we can be independent and make a living doing something on our own,” Yokum concluded.
