Kaieteur News – Senior Education Officer Sadiek Ishmael, Nicholas Fraser and Guyana Scouts Association Chief Scout Andrew Ramcharitar assisted Guyana Golf Association president Aleem Hussain in presenting the trophy for the First Inter-School Golf Championship held in Guyana to members of the winning team from Berbice Educational Institute at the Nexgen Golf Academy on Woolford Avenue.
The successful event was held on Friday March 5th with support from corporate sponsors Assuria General Insurance, Copa Airlines, Trophy Stall, and Nexgen Global Marketing.
The winning team was accompanied by their Physical Education teachers Osafa Dos Santos and Trolston Embrack, along with their top Male and Female Qualifier scorers Delton Cassiano and Subrina Balgobin and the National Male School Individual Champion Jamal Campbell.
BEI dominated the first ever inter-school Golf Championships and were emphatic about their chances to retain the top spot.
“We are working hard to develop our team and to bring at least 10 additional schools from Region 6 on-board with the programme in the next few weeks,” said Mr. Dos Santos.
This comes hard on the heels of Region 10’s launch of Golf in all of their Secondary schools with the support of Regional District Education Officer Nigel Richards, along with talks for possibly 8 schools in Region 3 to join Leonora Secondary in the Golf programme.
According to Mr. Ishmael, “This is a fully covid-19 compliant sport that promotes great qualities, focus and dedication for our kids and of course we at the Ministry of Education will rally behind the development of anything that promotes health, well-being, education and more importantly a fun, safe activity such as golf. With the help of Mr. Hussain and the Guyana Golf Association, we see this as becoming one of the major sports in Guyana very shortly.”
Guyana is now the leader in development of a school programme (and golf in general) in the region and it is expected that by end of 2021, more than 6,000 new players will be engaging in the sport, making it one of the most participated individual sports in the country. This is absolutely amazing when one considers that a year ago, the country only had approximately 65 active golfers.
The increase in the numbers can be credited to the opening of the lighted Nexgen Golf Academy and Driving Range on Woolford Avenue in the heart of Georgetown and the determined drive by the Guyana Golf Association to promote the sport to all persons who have ever been interested in playing.
“Our sole focus has been making the sport accessible and affordable to everyone – no high membership fees, equipment cost or limited access. We provide a unique teaching system that guarantees that anyone will be able to hit the ball properly in less than 15 minutes.” said Hussain.
