Kaieteur News – The best of the best will be on show tomorrow as the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) host the second development meet of the year at the National Track & Field Center (NTFC) at Onderneeming.
During the first meet a few weeks ago, Guyana’s national long jump record holder; Emanuel Archibald, leapt a world leading distance of 8.10m which was .02m short of his personal best.
In addition, Archibald was also dominant in the feature 100m dash, winning the marquee event in ablistering 10.21s via the finals by time route. His time, according to the then last update by the World Athletics website, was the fourth fastest of the year.
During tomorrow’s action, the Amelia’s Ward, Linden, resident will be looking to dig deep to make the 8.22m Olympic Standard, while he believes he needs a stronger finish to make the 10.05s 100m Olympic Standard.
In addition, National Javelin record holder, Leslain Baird has just under 8m to make to qualify for the event at the Tokyo games after tossing the spear 77.23m during last month’s Valentine’s day event. The Olympic Standard for the men’s javelin throw is 85m.
Head of the Athletics Association of Guyana, Aubrey Hutson, in an invited comment with Kaieteur Sport, has stressed that there will be strict covid-19 measures in place and he is hoping that the Olympic hopefuls can turn in great performances to qualify for the quadrennial event.
