DEAR EDITOR,
It is our duty as citizens to adhere to all laws, especially while on our roadways. I have reasonable trust in our Joint Service’s men and women in believing that they do make many good decisions. On the other hand, they are limited due to human nature and thus, are capable of making bad decisions as well. I would like to address the issue of the use of flashing lights by first responders as it could have cost me my life, several times while driving.
I’m very observant while driving since, at all times, my windows are closed. There are quite a few instances where I saw flashing lights in my rearview mirror, especially at night, and as mandated by law, pulled off to the left corner of the road. To my surprise, when the emergency vehicles (Police/ Ambulance) have passed, there are no sirens nor the vehicles are in any emergency. There are other cases when I see them coming from the opposite direction and I would do the same, sometimes causing a traffic jam, just to hear no sirens when the vehicles pass by.
To not make it seem isolated, I did an observation for one month while on my way to work and as I returned home for my concern to be appreciated.

I would humbly recommend that the Home Affairs Ministry develop a policy on the best use of flashing lights, considering the confusion it has caused when used in non-emergency situations.
Humble Citizen,
J. Yearwood
