Kaieteur News – As we celebrate Valentine’s Day, the holiday for lovers, we decided to shine our spotlight on 19-year-old entrepreneur, Marissa Greene. Greene is the owner of ‘Marissa’s Assorted Treats.’ Three years ago, around Valentine’s Day, Greene decided to test the waters in the baking business, and now, she has a good foothold. In fact, these days, persons look forward to her affordable and tasty bundles of baked goodies to tantalize the taste buds of their loved ones, or even themselves, on Valentine’s Day since she started three years ago.

At the time, Greene was still a student at the Bishops’ High School, where she completed both her CSEC and CAPE examinations. Greene is now a student of the University of Guyana studying International Relations. She, during an exclusive interview with Kaieteur News, said that she ventured into the business to see “if it would actually work out” for her. Then, it became something she fell in love with and as of August last year, she decided to pour all of her efforts into the business and officially kick-started it under the name Marissa’s Assorted Treats. Despite her love for baking, Greene shared that she was inspired by her support system, which comprised of her loved ones, including her immediate family, her friends and all others who play an integral role in her life, and where her small business is concerned. Her long-term goal is to have a little bakery that will be remembered for its tasty treats and elite customer service, since, according to her, what’s a business without good customer service. Greene noted, “like everything in life, challenges are met, but for me, challenges became lessons. Juggling between school, work and my small business has not been an easy task, mainly because I’ve found myself multi-tasking and compromising to get it done regardless.” Adding to that, she said that when she takes orders, she likes to give her customers the best of her ability because she knows that a certain expectation has to be met. She said that when she finds herself failing to meet a certain standard and she repeatedly attempts her craft to get it right, she gets saddened because deep down inside she knows she can do better. On the bright side, Greene stated that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic pushed her business a little, because it gave her the free time necessary to practice and perfect her craft. “Believe it or not, the pandemic pushed my small business a little bit because it gave me the opportunity to practice doing what I enjoy and it made me realize that this is something that I deeply enjoy doing,” Greene said. Further, the young entrepreneur disclosed that even though persons are skeptical of what they eat during this time, she was surprised that so many persons placed orders and allowed her the opportunity to learn more from what she does. Her main specialties include cupcakes and cheese straw. She does intend to extend her variety and enhance her knowledge about other pastries and goodies, so she can introduce them to her small business while allowing others to experience the results of the benefits she reaped. Greene strongly believes that this generation of small business owners wields the passion and talent needed for the future. She noted that persons hold the belief that young entrepreneurs should do more to push themselves further and develop, when the reality is that young and new faces to entrepreneurship are not given opportunities as much as those who are seasoned. Nevertheless, she is encouraging young entrepreneurs to trust the process. “A great way to promote small business locally is by simply spreading the word. Supporting a small business is easy and it can be done free of cost by simply sharing and telling others about it. Guyana is blessed with so many talented young people doing amazing things and we should protect them and do our best to help them develop themselves and our country,” Greene added. Today, for those celebrating Valentine’s Day, she is offering cupcake packages, where persons can get four delicious cupcakes of assorted flavours packaged nicely for $1,000. She also has another package, which includes the items in the previous bundle along with pink Moscato, an artificial rose, and a wine glass for just $3,000. At her pick up location today, she will also have individual cupcakes available for sale on a first-come, first-served basis.
