DEAR EDITOR,
I can recall when the PNC-APNU/AFC government shut down Wales Sugar Estate in December 2016, the then Opposition Leader Cde. Bharrat Jagdeo cautioned the government not to dismantle the factory nor sell out properties and plantation lands, however his call was never heeded to by the APNU+AFC government. The closure of Wales Estate was totally uncalled for as a going-concern to the industry since the APNU+AFC government Commission of Inquiry into the sugar industry never pinpointed closure of any estate but rather recommended rehabilitation and modernization of the business.
As such, I call on our current government to review its initial stance (whilst as opposition) on Wales Estate with a view of building a new sugar factory at Wales. This venture should supersede any other developmental plans for the site.
Sincerely yours,
Paul Ramrattan
