The slippery slope of oil

Dear Editor,

Recent details and damning revelations by Mr. Glenn Lall on what transpired on the giveaway of the Kaieteur and Canje oil blocks and the private resale thereafter for billions of dollars, should shock Guyanese. It speaks of what our leaders have done to our nation. Something is awfully fishy.
I will leave the Stabroek block and Exxon out of current discourse…this is beyond Exxon.
As a remigrant, I have a one-year-old Pitbull female dog for a few months, bred from foreign stock, very peaceful, family-friendly but very protective of its owner…me.
I brought another dog (male) from Bagotstown- a local breed. What an error in judgment on my part- the local dog has a habit of stealing and burying shoes of mine and my visitors.
The foreign-bred dog soon copied the same habit and now does the same. My cameras don’t lie; shoes have become an endangered item here.
Some may ask what my dog’s behavior of secretly stealing and hiding shoes have to do with oil. Well, the Kaieteur and Canje blocks were stolen from us by our leaders, given away and buried in alternate ownership.
Guyanese must wake-up – we just got choked and robbed. We need a day of peaceful rage throughout our country.
Again, this is not against Exxon, Hess, Total, Repsol, etc. It’s about our Government’s behavior. Exxon is a partner drilling wells 18 thousand feet in extreme pressure. We still struggle as a nation to drill for water 1500 feet, so they are not our target.
We demand Parliament to claw back ownership of the Kaieteur and Canje blocks, solicit international help to identify beneficial ownership, prosecute those that committed crimes.
As a signatory to AML, partners must assist in tracking ownership…Government must do its homework.
My fellow Guyanese, we have been bamboozled, ripped-off and pick-pocketed. Parliament must act to correct else we the people must consider taking back our country if our politicians can’t act on our behalf.
Glenn said it best when he noted we could have already received billons for these blocks (Kaieteur and Canje). Sugar workers will not have to wait on reopening of estates for a livelihood, youths throughout this nation with over 20% unemployment and under-employment can be put to work.
We can build 50,000 homes without borrowing; we can build a new Demerara River bridge without borrowing a cent, with these funds. Remember the Panama papers- the culprits will be found, with their secret ownership and bank accounts.
Remember financial disclosure and ministers who did not comply timely?
Going forward, all oil blocks should be capitalized into a Guyanese oil company like Saudi Aramco. External partners can be engaged contractually to drill for oil with a structured revenue-sharing agreement.
In the meantime, we can trade this company publicly via an IPO and raise billions of dollars that go directly into our treasury for Guyanese.
President Ali, we would like you to succeed, but if this issue lingers, it’s likely your government will fail before five years.
APNU… don’t get your hopes high, you are a spent shell on the floor, tried and failed.
It will be a people’s revolution against the tyranny of two parties over the years keeping us poor and in poverty while pockets were filled.
