Kaieteur News – A pedal cyclist who was making his way to work along the Number 11 Public Road, East Coast Berbice, was on Sunday struck down by a van that was reportedly speeding.
Ganesh Ramlakhan, a sluice operator and father of three, was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, hours after he was rushed there and was expected to undergo emergency surgery.
Based on the information provided by the police, the accident occurred sometime around 18:05hrs on the Bramfield Public Road, East Coast Berbice.
It involved a van, GRR 3351, owned by Purminu Ramkilleram, and driven by Vinood Baljeet, 47, of Letter Kenny Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
The van was proceeding east along the northern driveway about 35-40 kph on Bramfield Public Road when it hit a pedal cyclist, who was proceeding in the opposite direction along the northern side, swerved into the path of the vehicle.
The driver told police that he reacted by pulling right to avoid a collision. However, the right side rearview mirror came into contact with the pedal cyclist left arm causing him to fall onto the road surface.
The pedal cyclist was picked up by public-spirited citizens in a conscious state and placed into the same van which then took him to New Amsterdam Public Hospital. He was subsequently transferred to the GPHC where he succumbed.
He suffered a fractured left arm and other internal injuries.
Meanwhile, Hemwattie Balkaran, 29, wife of the dead man, stated that she was watching television when her neighbour called her via telephone to inform her that her husband was involved in an accident.
“She called and said my husband got an accident and when I come down this morning, I got the message he died. He left home to come to work”, she said.
According to Balkaran, her husband worked as a sluice operator for over three years and was the sole breadwinner of the home.
Kaieteur News was also informed that Ramlakhan had been involved in an accident at Borlam Turn a few years ago and also lost one of his brothers to an accident on the Number 19 Public Road in 2017.
Ramlakhan’s body is at GPHC awaiting a post mortem.
