The new government should immediately move the retirement age to 65
Dear Editor,
The new government should immediately move the retirement age from 55 years to 65. Those persons who reached 45 years at this point and will accumulate the required 33 years of service in 10 years can be allowed to retire at 55. The provision is that once they retire, they cannot and must not be rehired in any other areas of the public service on a contract basis.
An expanding economy and an impending shortage in skilled labour force makes this a necessity at this time. It also minimizes the cost to government when in many instances, persons are allowed to retire, collect their pension and then immediately rehired, in many instances in the same position they had just retired from.
