– Minister Sukhai
Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai, stated that the cost attached to the holding of Amerindian Heritage Month activities will not exceed $15M.
This is because the activities will be conducted virtually to keep with regulations of the Novel Coronavirus.
The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, over the past weeks, would have been assessing the country’s situation with COVID-19. They would have taken note of the startling rise in cases and finally decided to commemorate Guyana’s first people virtually.
In a virtual media launch held on Friday, Sukhai stated that there will be a ceremonial launch on September 1 at 11:00 am.
Guyana’s President, Irfaan Ali, will be delivering an address and there will also be remarks made by Minister Sukhai and other leaders within the Amerindian community.
The celebrations will be held under the theme, “Fostering Traditional Practices for a Safe Environment”.
There will be cultural presentations and performances by various groups all around Guyana which will be broadcasted live by the National Communications Network (NCN), the Department of Public Information (DPI), and the Ministry’s Facebook page every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday during the month.
There will also be a focus on Indigenous cuisine and persons will be able to sample various dishes at the Ministry. The dishes will also be free of cost. However, persons are required to make reservations for the dishes depending on the dates and availability.
There will also be an Art Exhibition from September 7-30 to showcase the arts and crafts of talented Amerindian artists across the country and this will be live-streamed as well.
The concept of online marketing for heritage month will also be explored.
Principal Regional Development Officer (PRDO), Anil Roberts, had previously told Kaieteur News that the Ministry was endeavouring to market crafts online.
Roberts had stated that this was imperative as COVID-19 protocols had to be kept with and administering physical purchasing would have put a strain on keeping with the social distancing guidelines.
It was also disclosed that the Ministry will also be engaging the younger generation in online lectures via the Zoom application.
Guyana has been observing Indigenous Heritage month since September 10, 1995. The month of celebration was introduced in honour of Guyana’s first Indigenous Member of Parliament, Stephen Campbell, whose life and work will also be recognised.
