These elections may be voided and the full consequences will become apparent

DEAR EDITOR,

A short time ago several heads of missions to Guyana, international observer teams, contesting political parties, civil society organizations and prominent personalities were vociferously and aggressively identifying instances of post-election fraud, while dismissing any suggestion of malpractice throughout the elections, and threatening dire consequences and sanctions if the transparency, credibility and results they required were not satisfied. Their concerns, demands and threats led to an agreement to amend the electoral laws to facilitate a transparent, thorough and complete national recount which has resulted in innumerable credible allegations, sustained by documentary evidence, of irregularities, illegalities and a conspiracy to commit massive electoral fraud. This development has been met with a thunderous silence, dismissiveness and apparent unconcern by many whose sensibilities were offended by imaginary offences.
The National Recount will soon be completed and the sheer magnitude of electoral malpractice and fraud, which some have tried to normalize, is still to be fully determined though there is, already, compelling and overwhelming evidence of hundreds and thousands of actual instances of electoral offenses, not the imaginary and highly speculative transgressions that threw the international community and PPP-affiliated groups into convulsions and hysteria blamed on Mingo. Many observation reports attached to Statements of Recount reveal numerous real offences (none of which have been attributed to Mr. Mingo) that attract criminal punishment, i.e. fines and incarceration, and include:
1. ballots cast by deceased persons;
2. ballots cast by electors who were from the jurisdiction and could not present themselves at the polling station on Election Day;
3. ballots cast by elector voting without ID and without evidence of Oath of Identity and requisite poll book entry;
4. ballots cast by electors voting with Certificate of Employment without evidence of tendering COE and requisite poll book entry;
5. ballots cast by Disciplined Services rejected because Presiding Officers neglected to affix official stamp; and
6. unavailability of Poll Books, marked OLEs and other statutory documents.
The post-election process has also occasioned actual violence and the threat of violence on election workers, policemen, ordinary citizens and school-children and have engendered prolonged political uncertainty and instability. All talk of consequences and sanctions by those initially eager to apply them seem to have evaporated. It is becoming more and more likely that these elections may be voided and the full consequences of this nefarious plot will become apparent and the only talk, at the moment, is of reward and shared governance for this national disaster and disgrace.
