Dear Editor,
The Recount Team should be allowed to complete its work without disruptions. Allegations of improprieties can be noted but should not be entertained at this time and must not be used to slow down the recounting process. The process must be expedited to end quickly.
The President has given his assurance that the recount will be taken to its conclusion. He will not break his word because Caricom and the international community are watching. He wants to be taken seriously as a man of his words. Thus, those in disagreement with the President and contemplating to use varied non-peaceful strategies to derail the recount process must rethink. They will not receive the support of the President and his trusted aides like Harmon, Amna, etc.
Chair Claudette Singh should not entertain allegations of voting improprieties at this time or allow herself to be swayed by threats. The recount is to determine the veracity of a count; it supplants a count and becomes the final count. She will follow the law.
GECOM is equally divided 3-3 on the recount. So the Chair’s vote is critical to break a tie. Her duty is to declare the outcome based on the recount and follow the law. Claudette Singh’s poll numbers have been climbing ever since she gave an assurance in a sworn affidavit to the court two months ago to ignore the Mingo count and authorized the recount. People feel she should exercise greater authority and agree with her that there should be additional work stations to expedite the recounting process. People feel GECOM should use the tabulation of the recount exercise to make a final declaration of the results of the election.
The recount is about numbers, not voting procedures. It must be certified and a winner declared.
People feel it is critical for the recount to be brought to a quick end so that party reps who feel election day improprieties would materially affect the outcome of an election can file an election petition in the court. And it is hoped the court would act on it quickly and not take five years as has happened in the election petition of 2015.
Yours truly,
Dr. Vishnu Bisram
