DEAR EDITOR,
Lately, I have observed a pattern that I detest greatly. People with titles such as Dr, LLB, etc representing for the Coalition and because of these titles, their messages are getting to reach their intended audience. Apparently, the editors only need to see one of these titles to publish an opinion or ranting of some individuals – the intelligentsia get to speak to the people, content does not seem to matter. Can you imagine a carpenter or a taxi driver giving an opinion to burn the ballot boxes or declare the elections a draw and getting that opinion published in the mainstream papers? That would never happen. No offense to taxi drivers and carpenters, I don’t think they are that mentally deranged to conceive such.
My attention was drawn to this one – “Guyana needs the leadership of David Granger at this point, not Irfaan Ali’s” by Dr. George K. Danns.
Danns, sorry, Dr. Dans, for some strange reason has started to think about who will lead Guyana after the results are declared. He knows it will be Granger if APNU/AFC wins but “If the PPP/C wins, it will be…I really cannot recall the name of the PPP/C Presidential Candidate. Can you?” So much for pretense from the doctor who had to Google to find the name of the PPP’s presidential candidate.
The irony of it all, is that Dr. Danns knows who won the elections, else there would be no need for his pretense.
In a show of biasness, Dr. Danns, rather than comparing the two presidential candidates on regularity of public appearance, sought to belittle Irfaan by saying Jagdeo is more in the public domain than Irfaan. Harmon appears more often than Granger too – just in case Danns didn’t know.
Dr. Danns asked, “Who is Irfaan Ali? What is his vision for the country? What type of leader is he? Why should he be trusted to become Guyana’s ultimate leader? The first three questions are paradoxical. Let me answer the last question for Dr. Danns in the simplest of terms. There is something called democracy by which the citizens of a country has a right, using their individual judgment, to elect a leader of their choice by popular vote – nothing else matters. It is on the principles of democracy laid out in our constitution that Irfaan was “trusted to become Guyana’s ultimate leader.”
It is difficult for the common man, in local parlance, to “suck it up” to these intelligent pretenders in the mainstream papers, they rarely get the chance. Even the ones that would have you believe that they are not mouthpieces for political parties seem to be more willing to entertain the intelligentsia, to contaminate the ordinary man with their instigating diatribes. Thank God for social media!
Yours respectfully,
Rudolph Singh
