DEAR EDITOR,
In recognition of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day which was celebrated on the 22nd of April each year, I humbly submit the following poem, thanking mother earth for providing for the world at large and to bring attention to the issue of climate action.
Guyana is a major global contributor to a safe, sustainable and healthy unpolluted environment, through the perpetual preservation of its vast rain forest for the greenhouse effect to help protect the ozone layer. Each Guyanese is an international player on the universal scene. Simply plant a tree as a basic helper to bring attention to earth’s dilemma.
“DESERT OR HURT NOT THIS DIRT”
So fatigued, I really need to rest,
Tis not for you to worry, I know best.
Me, never try to wittingly test,
Directly and indirectly, I do infest.
Every now and then give me a break,
In different ways, I do quietly speak.
Did you ever stop to think, I never freak,
I continue to provide you to the peak?
When you trample on me, I do hurt,
Me, you continuously do subvert.
Incessant actions, you did spurt,
Yet, how many times have I blurt?
With cracks and crevices, I reveal many a wound,
When you penetrate and make me your hound.
Did you ever listen if I make any wailing sound,
When deliberately, you unhesitatingly do pound?
Accepting your sharp, iron teeth that do pierce,
I willingly break into many a crumbled piece.
Accepting blows that are all the times fierce,
Then again, it’s not your fault, for, you, I coerce.
With me, you love to play many a rough game,
But, obliging you, I have no one else to blame.
You stamp on me, you swear and call me name,
What do I do, nothing, for you, I remain the same.
I see you are always, day after day, in dire need,
You use me to plant many of a different kind seed.
Relying on you, you have many heads to heed,
Yes, also, animals of more than one type, you breed.
From inception, you discovered me as the true source,
Through me, you become filled with tremendous resource.
Myself, I can effortlessly, replenish and reinforce,
Without external force, my duty, try not to enforce.
Do not worry or bleed, I can feed the many mouths you carry,
When you marry, loathe not, I shall clothe, you will be merry.
Hurry and rouse, in comfort, I will house, fear not and parry,
Let me scurry and show, you will grow, a smile you will carry.
Part of my value, you, I’ve shown, I can be as hard as stone,
Yet, try not to disown me, I cover your flesh and bone.
Many have been and flown, all four parts of my pointed zone,
Whatever you’ve thrown, in a calm tone, I accept alone.
The more you desire to take, the more I want to give,
Let me make your life fulfilled, so that happily, you can live.
In me, you place a stake, I shall forever remain active,
Awake and shake me, my objective is to forgive.
With your heart, do not part, I give you a berth,
Alert from start, you played with me from birth.
I’m not hurt when you hold me as dirt, tis my worth,
After all, I purport, you, not to desert, I am mother earth.
Yours respectfully,
Jai Lall
