Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Public Relations Officer Yolanda Ward told the press yesterday that District Four Returning Officer (RO) Clairmont Mingo’s office will reopen at 9:30 am today, in light of yesterday’s High Court ruling.
The office located in Ashmin’s building, Hadfield & High Streets, Georgetown, had been shut down for several days following the now vitiated declaration the RO made days ago.
In a ruling yesterday, Chief Justice Roxane George ruled that the Returning Officer breached the Representation of the People Act when he made a declaration of the region’s general and regional elections without following the legally mandated procedure. Now, he must go back to the tabulation process.
Ward said that Mr. Mingo will advise today whether he has decided to restart the process or continue from where it was left off.
