Genesis Fitness Gym’s Semonica Duke who considers herself as her fiercest rival is set, ready and prepared to be the winner of the female segment when the 6th edition of the Kares Crossfit and Lotus Hardware Caribbean Fitness Challenge comes off this Sunday at the National Park Tarmac.
Considered the most experienced female athlete in the sport, this being her 6th year and 9th CrossFit competition, Duke has been putting in the time at the gym and Sunday will be the perfect platform for her to showcase her hard work over the past months.
“This year has been the most determined year to date for me and my training has become much more compact with longer hours.”
Duke, who placed 2nd last year to Suriname’s Ava Zalman who would not be here to defend her title, will fancy her chances of going all the way for the second time around having already ended in the second place on three occasions.
Apart from the overseas athletes including the Surinamese who’ll be coming with the same drive and determination, Duke would be keeping an eye on her local colleague, Delice Adonis who finished in 3rd place last year.
Like she has dominated the Guyana Fitness Games Expo held in November, winning the individual and team gold medals for four years, Duke is seeking to transform that consistency to the Crossfit arena.
“My chances of winning are as good as my mental determination as I’m confident in the work that I’ve put in during my training.”
Duke believes that the prize monies being offered by Kares Crossfit and Lotus Hardware is fantastic as both the male and female top five will pocket the same amounts, positing that, “Both work hard in their individual fields.”
Prizes are: 1st $500,000, 2nd $400,000, 3rd $300,000, 4th $200,000 and 5th $100,000. Every other athlete will be given a participation award of $15,000. KaresCrossFit and Lotus Hardware would also reward athletes over the age of 30 with a cash reward of $100,000, 2nd $75,000 and 3rd $50,000, for first, second and third.
Duke is encouraging the fans and spectators to come out in their numbers on Sunday: “CrossFit is still a growing sport in Guyana and over the years we’ve been motivating people through these local competitions. I would encourage fans to come out and see what it’s all about; it can be the start of something great for someone, at the same time supporting their local athletes.”
There would also be the second edition of the Teen Challenge competition which will see a total of 15 competitors, male and female, under age 17 taking on each other. Prizes would be awarded to the top three in each category of $30,000, $25,000 and $20,000.
Tickets for Sunday’s event are on sale at KaresCrossfit in Queenstown, Genesis Fitness Gym on Durban Street, and Fitness Express on Sheriff Street at the cost of $1000 each. Children Under-10 would gain free entry.
Partners and sponsors for the event are KaresCrossFit, Lotus Hardware, AnsaMcAl with their I Cool Water and Lucozade brands, MVP Sports, Berkinstock Guyana, Pollo Tropical, Star Party Rentals, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Fitness Express and Genesis Fitness Gym.
