Gledewin Henry Jr. XI defeated Ryan Atkinson XI by 88 runs when the teams collided in an U17 40-over fixture on Saturday last at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground.
Led by an attacking half century from Devendra Hansraj, Henry Jr. XI managed 172-9, batting first. They were given a steady start by Devon Ramratan and Ricky Persaud before the latter was bowled by Sachin Chulai for eight with the score on 32.
Following their separation, Henry Jr. XI lost Mohan Ali (00), Tekeshwar Nankoo (00) and Henry Jr. (03), but Ramratan and Devendra Hansraj added 53 for the fifth wicket to steady the innings. Hansraj then added 52 for the sixth wicket stand with Terrence Softleigh; Hansraj struck four fours and four sixes in his unbeaten 50, while Softleigh was dismissed for 44. No other batsman offered any significant resistance as Chulai took 2-23, while there was one each for Atkinson, Nazam

Hansraj uprooted the stumps of Ravy Nandlall (02) while pacer Ricky Persaud had Ramesh Ramnarine (05) caught before disturbing the stumps of Kumesh Sudin (07) to reduce Atkinson XI to 21-3, in reply. Atkinson and Chulai steadied the chase somewhat with a fourth wicket partnership of 31 before Chulai was bowled by Ricky Persaud.
Following his demise, Henry Jr. picked up some quick wickets, however Atkinson wasn’t afraid to play his shots; he counted four fours and three sixes before he was bowled by Henry Jr. for an even half century as his team were sent packing for 93 in 23 overs. Henry Jr. finished with 5-16 while Ricky Persaud had 3-18.
Following the contest, President of the Wakenaam Cricket Committee, Khemraj Surujpaul congratulated the winners and urged the young cricketers to continue training.
The game was organised by the Wakenaam Cricket Committee.
