Jermaine Figueira MP was elected unopposed as the President of the Upper Demerara Cricket Association (UDCA) when the body held its Annual General Meeting (AGM), recently. The executive will serve until 2022.
Lancelot Easton will serve as the Vice President while the other members of the executive are; Nolan Beekharry-Secretary, Sharon Williams-Assistant Secretary, Keith Sullivan-Treasurer, Wanda Richmond-Assistant Treasurer, Avery Trim-Marketing Manager, Flemroy Lambert-Public Relations Officer and Mortimer Denny -Chairman of the Competitions Committee.
Mr. Figueira expressed gratitude to the members for giving him an opportunity to serve the game there and outlined his plans for cricket development in Upper Demerara. Among them is to rebuild proper playing surfaces at Mackenzie Sports Club and the Linden Technical Institute grounds, soonest.
He further stated that discussions are already underway with East Bank Demarara and Guyana Cricket Boards to assist in the revival of cricket in the area where little or no cricket has been played for almost a decade.
He complimented Bayroc and Mackenzie Clubs for the effort to bring back the game to the Bauxite Mining Town. The Guyana Cricket Board recently announced that the entity will be building an all-weather practice facility in Linden giving some level of hope that the area will finally be getting some much needed help for the revival of the game.
It is understood that previous cricket administrators in Linden, of recent, failed to plan and execute any level of cricket related events and the new executive committee intends to work collectively for the growth in the areas with plans on stream to start a sponsored competition as early as next week.
Clubs present at the meeting included Bayroc, Mackenzie Sports Club, Wisroc , Block 22, Blueberry Hill, Christianburg and Amelia’s Ward.
