Jan 08, 2020 Letters
DEAR EDITOR,
I have read a letter published in one of the national newspapers dated January 7, 2020 penned by a senior citizen who was perplexed about the future of senior citizens as to their benefit now that oil production has come into the equation.
I am in total concurrence with the writer. The pregnant silence which surrounds this topic by all political parties is disturbing. We must recognise that for the last fifty years the now pensioned sector of society had the Herculean task of getting to work each day by walking, riding bicycles or bus, through sun and rain. This was done because of their belief that one day things would get better and they also had to feed their families and contribute to their great nation.
I had, for about four hours, listened attentively to the 2018 budget presented to the nation by the Honourable Finance Minister who in his closing statement made it clear that due to calls received from concerned pensioners about the poor recompense given for their commitment to this country. He promised then he would have addressed that issue in the 2010 budget.
I am aware that his hands are restrained due to the extant political situation that had been foisted upon this nation in December 2018. I, in my usual pessimistic nature hope that with oil now being considered in the economic sphere of things that some mention about this situation be made by all stakeholders to give those patriotic pensioners their due.
Regards,
Orin Major
