Chairman of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Competition’s Committee Shaun Massiah told Kaieteur Sport that their 2020 season is set to commence on January 18.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Massiah said that there are a number of competitions yet to be completed and he is calling on the clubs to ensure that their grounds be in a state of readiness to facilitate a start on the aforementioned date.
Massiah reminded that the Transfer Window period is still open and it will be closed on the January 31, stating that clubs are required to submit a list of all registered players on or before February 7.
He indicated that there will be a Competition’s Committee meeting on January 14 at 18:30hrs at Muslim Youth Organisation, Woolford Avenue.
Massiah informed that the U19 100overs competition (won by DCC), the 50-over U19 (won by Tri State of New York), the Toucan U15 (won by GCC) and the New Building Society second division (won by GCC) were completed in 2019. He said that they are hoping to complete more tournaments in 2020, with a first division 50-over, U17, first and second division T20 and an U13 competitions are on the cards for which they are soliciting sponsorship.
“As we resume I am looking forward for the continued cooperation and relationship with all the clubs and I hope the clubs make their grounds available for the smooth running of GCA cricket. Our cricketers are longing to play on a consistent basis, rather than playing matches two to three weeks apart, so it is important that the clubs make their grounds readily available,” he added.
“I also want to remind that our mandate is to develop players capable of representing the GCA Association, Demerara, Guyana and West Indies with distinction and in order for this to happen clubs need to give their players the opportunity to play and not depend too much on players that have gone on to play at the higher levels. In this development plan you may lose some and win some, but it’s all part of the game.”
Among the positives that Massiah indentified in the past season are; a number of players went on to play for Guyana and the West Indies at various levels including Ashmead Nedd who is currently with the West Indies U19 World Cup squad and Kemol Savory who went on to play for the Guyana Jaguars in the 2019 CWI Regional Super 50.
He noted that while the clubs tried their best to make their grounds available to the GCA during the last season, it is important they (GCA) acquire the uses of the bigger grounds so that the first division competitions can be held on a regular basis. “We were able to utilise the Queen’s College ground during that last season which is another plus for us, however we are hoping to stage two matches there simultaneously since the ground can facilitate same.”
The GCA held a fast bowling clinic last season and Massiah pointed out that there plans to stage more such clinics and to get the female players more involved in tournaments.
He was pleased that the young cricketers of Transport Sports Club were able to use the ground in the latter part of 2019 since it was upgraded.
Meanwhile, GCC and DCC are leading the points standings in zone A and B respectively in the current NBS second division 40 overs competition. In Zone A, GCC have 79 points followed by Malteenoes Sports Club on 69, Muslim Youth Organisation on 67, Gandhi Youth Organisation 48, University of Guyana 40, Diplomats 28, Guyana Defence Force 24 and Third Class on eight.
In Zone B, DCC have so far accumulated 104 points ahead of Transport Sports Club on 66, Everest CC 65, Police SC 45, Ace Warriors 31, Sophia 26, Bel Air 24 and GNIC SC 12.
Zone A in the Noble House Sea Foods second division two-day tournament is being headed by GCC on 106 points, followed by GDF 72, MYO 69, GYO 63, MSC 56, Ace Warriors 22 and GNIC SC 19.
DCC lead Zone B with 104 points, while Transport SC are in second place on 102, ahead of UG on 74, Diplomats 57, Bel Air 37, Everest 35, Police 35 and Third Class on 22.
