The Guyana Police Force Regional Division Two, has recorded an alarming 90 percent increase in armed robberies involving a firearm. This statistics was recently reflected during the Division’s Christmas presentation, earlier this week.
According to the information on the crime statistics, in 2018, there were six robberies in which a firearm was used. In 2019, however, there have since been 10 instances of robberies, in which a firearm was used, indicating a 90% increase from the previous year.
While the statistics clearly indicates a prevalence in gun use within the Pomeroon/Supenaam region, it appears that there has been no discovery of firearms, or ammunition, during the 2019 period.
The crime stats presented continued, “During the period under review, ranks in the division recovered no firearm and ammunition in 2019, when compared to two firearm and 128 rounds of ammunition being discovered in 2018.”
One can imagine that with the increase of ‘gun play’, the likelihood of a murder being committed is high. According to the crime stats, in 2018 there were two murders. In 2019, however, there have been six murders; a 66.4% increase. This publication understands that the majority of murders committed this year, were as a direct result of alcohol usage.
As it relates to the discovery of Narcotics in 2019, police indicated that 431.4 grams of cannabis and cocaine were found in 2019. Twenty-one persons were arrested and charged for cocaine and cannabis during the year so far.
