Minister of Public Telecommunications, Catherine Hughes, accompanied by Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Valerie Garrido Lowe, visited several North Rupununi villages to distribute electronic devices to core groups and to inform the residents about the maximised use of the electronic devices.
This exercise went on for three days- from September 25, 2019. Villages including Fairview, Surama, Apoteri, Rewa, Rupertee , amongst several others benefited, the statement said.
It was also disclosed that this move will allow residents to make use of the free government Wi-Fi which has been established in these villages.
According to the statement, electronic tablets have been presented to women, youth, sport, wildlife, and cultural groups.
In addition, nursery and primary schools as well as village leaders received electronic tablets in each of the villages.
Minister Hughes noted that there are major plans in store for ICT in the hinterland that will positively impact major sectors such as health, education, tourism and business in the communities.
She said, “Young people especially know how to use this technology and that is what we will build on.”
She said that there are plans to extend the internet service from the Fairview Health Centre to the school making it more convenient for residents. Likewise, the internet services in the other villages will be extended to key buildings to facilitate further scheduled upgrades the statement explained.
According to Minister Valerie Garrido-Lowe, residents are encouraged to use the internet for marketing of local products and promoting their village as a tourism destination among other things.
Training in the operation of the devices, creation and management of web pages and the usage of software for businesses and other purposes were facilitated for some of the residents in the villages the statement said.
Toshao of Fairview, Martin Carter who benefitted from the training at an initial workshop, welcomed the establishment of the internet service and all the benefits that will accrue the statement claimed. Martin said that he is prepared to work with fellow trainees to ensure others in his village, especially the older residents, acquainted with the tablets and other ICT devices.
