Guyana for Guyanese must continue to be our mantra

DEAR EDITOR,
It is clear from recent news on Venezuela what position the Venezuelans hold dear in their heart as it concerns Essequibo. The recent establishment of a homestead in Essequibo for Venezuelan migrants is completely and totally against the best interest of national security. We must as a nation stay on guard against our declared enemy and we must avoid being deceived into thinking that we have more opportunities to offer immigrants than their richer home countries.
As is said by most, “Charity Starts At Home” and it is unwise for us to open our borders, towns and villages to those who dislike us while not taking care of our own citizens first and foremost.
Our unemployment rate is such that we cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the plight of our own Guyanese people. It should also be noted that any immigration policy should be extremely selective with a bias to the highly educated who bring with them skills not found presently within our borders.
In the case of the Haitians, we must keep in mind that their homeland has one of the highest cases of deforestation in the world primarily due to illegal activity. Is this the type of cultural influence we want within our borders, especially given our position on sustainability? One would think the answer would be a resounding No!
These are some of the fundamental factors that our leaders need to consider going forward if we are to ensure the security and development of our nation and its most important asset “Our People”.
