Taxi driver allegedly stabs man who owed him $2,000

An argument over $2,000 ended with one man nursing stabs wounds and the other remanded to prison. Morris Carter was yesterday arraigned before the courts where a charge of attempted murder was read to him.
It was alleged that on August 27, 2019 at Sandy Babb Street, Kitty Georgetown, the defendant wounded Matthew Gilbert with intent to commit murder.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which was read to him by Senior Magistrate Clive Nurse in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The defendant was represented by attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson who asked for reasonable bail be granted to his client. The attorney informed the court that Carter is 43 years old, and from Lot 20 D’Urban Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown.
According to defence council, on the day in question, his client was at a wash-bay having his car cleaned when he was approached by the alleged victim. An argument and a fight ensued, in which Carter received injuries. However, Gilbert was not charged.
On the other hand Police Prosecutor Christopher Morris told the court that it was Carter who approached Gilbert. He stated that Carter asked Gilbert for the $2,000 he owed him as the remaining payment for a $7,000 finger ring.
However, after Gilbert said he did not have money the defendant became annoyed and allegedly stabbed Gilbert with a knife.
Gilbert was taken to the Kitty Health Centre, and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). He was treated and sent away, but was readmitted yesterday.
Based on the facts presented the prosecutor objected to bail being granted citing the nature of the offence and given that the victim is hospitalised.
The submission by the prosecutor was upheld and the defendant was remanded until September 26, 2019.
