SELLOUT TO THE DEATH OF GUYANA!

DEAR EDITOR,

On June 17th, I wrote in your newspaper that over the next twenty-two years, over one trillion U.S dollars will be lifted from our seabed, and that Guyanese – the many, not the few – must get half of that, or five hundred billion U.S. dollars.
This was by way of stating that Bharrat Jagdeo, while speaking in Lethem during LG Elections, had self-satisfyingly said that we’ll be getting four hundred million U.S dollars a year from our oil. You’ll recall I had referred to that paltry sum as peanuts.
As if not to be outdone, in the race to serve their foreign ‘massa’ and one of that ‘massa’s’ plundering companies, ExxonMobil, Winston Jordan, our Finance Minister, if you please, in Bartica, on the same day the CCJ determinations were handed down, suitably reduced Jagdeo’s four hundred million to three hundred million. I dare say some new party might just reduce it down to two hundred million.
Local leaders, falling over themselves to curry favour and do their psychological duty to the foreign ‘massa’ via ExxonMobil, saying, “See! I’m doing more to help you leave even less than the usual 2 or 3 per cent behind in Guyana than you’ve left in other poor countries”.
All this has nothing to do with the so called Dutch Disease Editor. That title might be fitting for Holland where it occurred in 1977 during their find of natural gas, impacting their economy negatively. It certainly does not fit our history of economics where plunder by outsiders, ably assisted locally by sheer insane greed on the one hand, and the proverbial house slave mentality on the other, has brought us now to this sorry pass.
Might we yet get that new Jaganite, Dr. Frank Anthony, to develop our Guyana at last for every single one of us, staggeringly!
