Guyana is traversing uncharted and possibly turbulent waters

Guyanese are anxiously awaiting the consequential orders which the CCJ will be making on June 24 following its landmark decisions on the issue of the no-confidence motion and the appointment of the GECOM Chairman.
It is almost certain that there will no convergence of views by the two sides on the date for elections and the appointment of a new GECOM Chairman, which will then put the CCJ in the unenviable position of having to make consequential orders.
Ideally, it would have been desirable and a manifestation of political maturity had the two sides agreed on a way forward ahead of the June 24 deadline set by the Court.
This unfortunately is wishful thinking, especially in the context of statements made by President Granger on the issue of a new Voters’ List.

There is no apparent sense of urgency regarding the need to find common ground ahead of June 24.
The fact that President Granger has signalled his intention to hold elections only after the compilation of a new Voters’ List is not particularly helpful in the search for a solution to the conundrum that the Government has found itself as a consequence of the CCJ ruling.
This raises questions of compliance with the orders of the CCJ and the instruments available by that Court to give effect to the rulings and consequential orders that may emanate therefrom.
Guyana is traversing uncharted and possibly turbulent waters. It is interesting to see how events will unfold in the days ahead.
