Little Ciara Benjamin was laid to rest on Friday, days after a horrific accident at Agricola. That accident caused mob behaviour to spiral out of control.
On Friday, at the Lyken’s Funeral Home, relatives and friends gathered to say their last goodbye.
A pink casket and balloons were part of her send-off.
Even for the funeral home and for Dawn Stewart, the owner, preparing Ciara was a hard task.
Two Saturday’s ago, Ciara, 7, was with an aunt on the Agricola public road, at the median, when a truck heading in the direction of Timehri, suddenly veered toward her. Video footage from security cameras did not explain why. Ciara was crushed on the median, while her aunt escaped death.
The situation escalated to lawlessness as the driver was pelted with objects and then reportedly beaten. The truck was later set alight by an angry mob.
The traffic was blocked off for hours and it was not until last Sunday that the remnants of the truck were removed.
The accident had sparked a wave of sympathy and anger. There have been no charges to date.
The injured truck driver, Danion Welcome, has reportedly been discharged from the hospital and is on station bail.
