Season of promises

DEAR EDITOR,

This is the season of promises. Things that were not done for years will now be done or appear to be done. There will be several Ministerial and Cabinet outreaches in areas that were hitherto unknown. It is what some describe as the political mango season.
This is not entirely unusual or uncommon in the run-up to elections. This is one time of the year in which incumbency is an advantage. The governing party under the guise of promoting development has the national coffers at its disposal along with the State media. Babies will be lifted in the caring hands of politicians in full media glare.
Jobs will be promised and young people will be elevated to the front row. Women and the elderly will be will be given due prominence and respect. There will be national awards for ‘outstanding’ Guyanese. And if these were not enough, education will be promised free of cost from kindergarten to university.
In the final analysis, however, it will all boil down to trust; which of the competing political parties can be trusted to deliver on its promises. The acid test of electoral support will be on elections day in free, fair and verified elections.
All indications are that elections are around the corner. What else can explain this newly found love for the masses, the so-called wretched of the earth?
