Guyanese cricketing legend who is currently in Guyana. The tournament, initially scheduled for yesterday, was deferred to tomorrow, as the Lusignan Golf Club executive and members honored the passing of a faithful long serving employee, the late Kampta Ramdhan, aka ‘Manny’, whose cremation took place yesterday.
Joseph Stanislaus Solomon, born 26 August 1930, at Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice, is a former Guyanese and West Indian cricketer – contemporary with Sir Gary Sobers and Frank Worrell – who played 27 Tests for the West Indies from 1958 to 1965, scoring 1326 runs, mainly from number six and seven in the batting line-up. Joe stamped his name in Test Cricket history at what one sports writer in 2011 considered “probably the most dramatic international cricket match ever played – 1960’s tied Test at Brisbane: Australia v West Indies.”
Joe Solomon also played first-class cricket for British Guiana/Guyana from 1956 to 1969 and is the only player in first-class cricket history to score centuries in their first three innings for British Guiana – doing so in the 1957–1958 series. After 1969 Joe maintained his cricketing involvement being on the selection panel for the West Indies team, serving as Chairman of the Guyana Cricket Board and coaching a local team in Guyana. Joe, who is an honorary life member of the Lusignan Golf Club, still plays golf.
Today’s medal-play 18-hole tournament tees-off at 9:00 a.m. and prizes for 1st and 2nd in each Flight, as well as Longest Drive, Best Gross and Nearest the Pin will be up for grabs.
