A Diamond supermarket manager was yesterday hauled before the courts to answer an attempted murder charge.
Xino Xi Qu appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before the Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge after it was read to him.
The charge alleged that on April 22, 2019 at Diamond Public Road, East Bank Demerara, with intent to commit murder, the defendant wounded Gregory Sanmoogan. Xino stood in the prisoner’s docks quietly as the information was being related in court.
The defendant’s attorney stated that his client is 28-year-old from Lot 1 ‘B’ Diamond Public Road, East Bank Demerara. He said that the defendant is a manager at the Freshco supermarket which is located at the same address as his home.
The attorney added that the defendant had lodged his passport with the police and he is willing to comply with any conditions that are satisfying to the court.
Police prosecutor Gordon Mansfield had no objections to bail for the defendant, however he asked that conditions be attached.
He then presented the facts of the charge which stated that on the day in question around 08:30hrs, the victim went to the s
upermarket where the defendant worked. Sanmoogan then purchased some items and left.
While the victim was out on the public road, Xino came from behind and hit him on his head. The defendant then dealt him several cuffs and kicks about the body.
According to reports, the defendant committed this act because he claimed the victim stole $200,000 cash which was left in a plastic bag on one of the cashing counters at the supermarket.
Sanmoogan headed to the Golden Grove police station where he made a report. He then went to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital and was admitted as a patient for several days.
The victim was discharged recently and he made an appearance at court. However, Sanmoogan was unable to enter the courtroom as he is currently in a wheel-chair and the courtroom is in the upper flat of the courts.
After listening to both sides Magistrate McLennan adjourned the matter until May 17, 2019. She granted bail to the tune of $400, 000 and instructed that Xino report to the Golden Grove police station every Friday pending the hearing and determination of the matter.
