The third agro-processing exhibition, dubbed UncappeD, is slated to be held at the National Stadium, Providence, on March 31, 2019. The exhibition is meant for small and medium scale agro-processors to showcase their products and services.
At the Annual General Meeting of the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association Limited (GMSA) held last Thursday, President Shyam Nokta spoke of the success the exhibition has garnered over the years, since its initial start in 2017.
He said that the event has now evolved into a programme of activities , including the UncappeD Marketplace. Last year, two events occurred, in April at the Providence Stadium and in July at the Leonora Track Facility. Both events saw over 80 exhibitors and hundreds of patrons attending.
Nokta said, “UncappeD has already seen benefits through several small agro-producers having their products recognized at the national level and being featured in local supermarkets and shops, while some have been able to secure lucrative regional and international markets.”
Further, the UncappeD initiative, according to the GMSA’s annual report, will soon be embarking on a nationwide public awareness programme to feature Agro-Processors and their products, and to work with wholesalers and retailers, as well as key sectors such as the tourism and hospitality industries to feature these products.
The GMSA has been working to expand its membership in the agro-processing sector. It has also had a ministerial roundtable discussion with government officials.
They had discussed support for packaging and labeling; sourcing technology to assist small and remote agro-processors to do primary value-adding at site; and the implementation of the training and capacity building initiatives for agro-processors under the UncappeD Initiative.
The GMSA has urged the government to conduct a feasibility study for a consolidated packaging and processing facility through a Public-Private partnership, and for budgetary support for its UncappeD programme.
