A 41-year-old electrical contractor was slapped with a fraud charge after he allegedly converted a sum of $120,000 that was supposed to be used to purchase materials for a job into his own use and benefit.
Marlon Perreira who hails from the East Coast of Demerara made an appearance on Friday before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It was alleged that on May 22, 2018 at Georgetown, the accused being entrusted with the sum of $120,000 by Debra Luke so that he can purchase two Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) monitors and four cameras; he fraudulently converted the sum to his own use and benefit.
Perreira entered a not guilty plea after the charge was read out to him.
The facts of the charge presented by police prosecutor Sanj Singh indicated that the two parties are known to each other. The victim hired Perreira to conduct an installation of security cameras at her business entity.
The accused recommended that Luke purchase the articles mentioned in the charge and as a result, she handed over the sum on the day in question. After that day, Luke never saw the defendant again nor did he try making contact with her.
On December 3, 2018, the victim went to the home of Perreira where she confronted him. The accused reportedly told her that ‘I did what I had to do’ and ended the conversation.
A report was made to Cove and John police station, which saw the defendant being contacted and told of the allegation. He was cautioned, arrested and taken into police custody. Further investigation was carried out and the charge was made out against the accused for the offence.
Prosecutor Singh had no objections to bail being granted therefore, Senior Magistrate Leron Daly granted bail to the tune of $50,000. The matter was adjourned until March 8, 2019.
