Assuming that APNU concedes to the No Confidence Vote, it is advantageous to them to go to the Polls immediately. Their political and administrative structures are in place. The election machinery is in their control, as are the support mechanisms. Those are the naked facts. Time will shift these dynamics.
The PPP is in a quandary. Six hopefuls for Presidential Candidacy emphasises that predicament. Machinations to have a “hand-servant” as the candidate do not have the acceptance of the voting public. The end-game for the PPP is not its inner circle but its support base, a support base that is not necessarily loyal to the PPP or to its General Secretary, but more supportive of persons within the Party’s hierarchy. Thus, a hand-picked candidate identified by any sleight of hand will not go down well. The public in general is no longer glued to voting based on race. That never worked and will never work. The public is looking at Candidates rather than Party.
If APNU were to put up any other person than David Granger as Presidential candidate, it would be in the same dilemma.
In fact, the political environment is evolving wherein the electorate is becoming more and more critical of those who profess to lead in their interest, but who actually do the opposite.
Like it or not, Charrandass has shown that one dissenting voice can trigger an avalanche. Our political leaders should take note, since more is to come from within all political enclaves. Our younger aspirants are no longer afraid to dissent. The two heavyweights in Parliament will have to contend with small independent Parties who should use their swing votes to support issues rather than Parties.
The next five months are crucial to this Nation. The people must speak, not the Parties.
