Detectives are preparing to question a recently-fired employee of the Diamond Secondary School as they seek to nab the arsonist behind the recent fire at the institution.
Investigators suspect that the culprit may be someone who has a vendetta against officials at the school.
Kaieteur News understands that the individual that police want to question was fired a few weeks ago. It was believed that the former staffer was involved in a recent theft at the school.
The cash was removed from a safe for which only a few individuals had access to the keys.
The fire, which occurred around 01.00 hrs on Christmas Eve, was set in the school’s administration building.
The headmistress and deputy’s offices, staff room, library and Information Technology laboratory, staff records, documents, tokens such as trophies and certificates were destroyed
Investigators from the Guyana Fire Service have reportedly prepared a report which states that the fire appeared to have been set in two areas in the building, which had ample ‘flammable materials’.
Police are also questioning the security guards who were on duty when the fire occurred. The guards appeared to have been unaware that the building was on fire until the blaze was almost out of control.
According to a source, the guards are instructed to patrol the premises every hour. At least one guard reportedly smelt smoke on two occasions, but did not notice anything amiss.
Fire Chief Marlon Gentle had said that around 01.30 hrs, an on-duty security guard informed ranks at the nearby Diamond Fire Station that the school was on fire.
While not at the time ruling out the possibility of it being an electrical fire, Gentle also said that the fire service had suspicions about how the blaze had occurred.
He also spoke about the November 15, 2018 incident in which four teachers from Diamond Secondary School were taken into police custody over the disappearance of $107,000 from the school’s safe.
The money was reportedly collected from the 2018 batch of graduating students for their certificates and gowns, and only two persons were in possession of keys to the safe.
