My mother’s relatives from her mother’s side were a strange people, from the town of Rose Hall, Region Six. They are the Bates, Hicks, Harrys, Moores, and few others .My grandmother was called ‘Dougla Evlin,’ and this was because she was a mixture of African and Indian. On her African side, where the Bates and Harrys, who came from Suriname, while the Hicks clan came from India.
This tapestry of humanity is very much a part of who I am , therefore when I make calls for one Guyana, it is because, I believe in the saying that “the color of a man’s skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes,” and as a result every Guyanese must be respected for who they are.
My Bates and Harry ancestors were a people known for their spiritual connection to the marine spirits at the Rosehall water side . I have been told that they would take sacrifices to the sea, and return speaking in strange languages and dancing on their heads. One relative related to me that the gifted children were sometimes taken back to the village in Suriname and made to ‘walk on ccaiman’s back.’
I am giving this information that some might understand that I respect all men ,in spite of race or religion. However, I must admit that it does not rest well with me when I see political figures putting the people of my homeland against each other, based on these issues. Those who have over and over been guilty of using race and religion as a trump card to divide our people must stop and apologize before we go into another elections in Guyana , or take responsibility for any racial incidents that end in bloodshed or loss of property.
Enough blood is crying out from Guyana’s soil, and the appointed race relations committee must not wait until something happens ,as in the case of Crum-Ewing to put something in place to prevent a repeat of the same. The people that killed that young man for sharing his views are still out there, and may be thinking that they can do it again. The Ethnic Relations Committee must work for its money.
