A 25-year-old father of two is now dead following a brazen attack by a fellow villager in Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Dead is Carl McDonald, called “Carly” of High Dam, Angoy’s Avenue. Police are on the hunt for the suspect who committed the act, Samuel Chase, of the said village.
Reports are that both the suspect and the deceased were at a Bar BQ in the village when an argument erupted. Chase reportedly charged towards McDonald with a cutlass and slashed him across the torso before dumping his body in the nearby trench.
The incident took place in the presence of other persons attending the event. The suspect then escaped and has since gone into hiding. However, police have confirmed that one person is in police custody assisting with investigations.
Meanwhile, at the home of the deceased, his mother Loraine McDonald, still visibly shaken and torn apart by the news that her son was murdered, told reporters that her son left home some time around 18:30 hours on Boxing Day to attend the Bar BQ.
Half an hour later her nephew went to her breathless and relayed that “Carly get chop and he fall overboard”.
She stated that she was still in shock and disbelief that her son is no more. She added that he had only recently begun working in the interior to help provide for his two children who are eight and six years old.
Upon inquiries, the devastated woman explained that there was an argument between her nephew and the suspect Christmas Eve night (Monday). She is still puzzled how her son got involved and was met with death.
“Dem had some argument about a girl and he come back Boxing Night with a cutlass so I do not know what played out because l was not on the street.”
However, an eyewitness who happens to be a cousin of the deceased, Troy Caesar, 20, disclosed that he was walking along the High Dam when he spotted (the deceased) walking towards him.
“But like it had li’l vibes so me and he stand up in a corner. Then suddenly the man come and fire a chop to me but I run back and stand up far away and then I see Carly stand up in the corner and the man run to he and chop he.
“But Carly throw a bottle towards he and the man duck and I run to the man and after he see I coming he throw Carly overboard”. Caesar stated that the suspect ran away but he immediately jumped into the water to save his cousin.
“I deh calling out for help but nobody ain’t helping. Is me other cousin come and some other family come out and help me pull he out the trench.”
He was still breathing at the time he was fished out and relatives in a bid to save his life, tried to perform CPR but that proved to be unsuccessful.
The police were subsequently contacted and his body was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital Mortuary where a post mortem examination was conducted yesterday. The results revealed that he died as a result of a single wound entered from his chest straight to his abdomen.
Additionally, residents told this publication that the suspect is a known troublemaker in the village and would often threaten persons in the area. When the police are contacted, “they do not come”.
