– gunmen still detained
The Assistant Superintendent who was allegedly robbed during a coke-buying caper is now under close arrest, along with a rank who took a statement that implicated the ASP, and a third cop who allegedly destroyed the statement.
Crime Chief Lyndon Alves confirmed last night that the rank was in custody, as well as two of his colleagues.
“We are investigating the allegations under which he was robbed…a senior officer is looking into it. His allegation is that he was robbed. We have to ascertain if that was indeed what happened.”
He said that “based on other information, other ranks were brought in for questioning and placed under close arrest.”
Kaieteur News understands that the ‘C’ Division-based ASP was placed under close arrest on Saturday. The other two ranks were under close arrest since early last week.
Also still in custody are two Linden-based gunmen who had allegedly robbed the ASP of some $6M and his firearm during the botched drug deal.
The individuals are said to be from Linden and are reportedly linked to a dealer from that location.
According to sources, one detained policeman had taken a statement which implicated the ASP. However, a detective sergeant, who is now under close arrest, had allegedly destroyed the statement in an attempt to shield the ASP.
Kaieteur News understands that one of the detained men told investigators that he and his accomplice were instructed to purchase two kilogrammes of cocaine from an individual.
They were reportedly instructed to rob the buyer, and were allegedly unaware that the buyer was a policeman.
It is alleged that when the policeman arrived in his vehicle at the La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara location, the men assaulted him and took some $6M he had in the vehicle. One of the men also fled with the policeman’s firearm.
However, the rank allegedly managed to hold onto the other individual, and subdue him with help from persons nearby.
It is alleged that the individuals involved in the deal later realised that the victim was a policeman. They reportedly then made arrangements for the firearm to be returned.
‘C’ Division Commander Calvin Brutus had last week declined to comment on the reports, and referred Kaieteur News to Crime Chief Lyndon Alves.
The ASP had claimed that he was robbed of his licensed 9mm pistol and jewellery two Mondays ago in the vicinity of La Bonne Intention (LBI).
The ‘robbers’ were said to have fired several shots into the policeman’s vehicle.
The rank has said that he recovered his gold band and chain from one of the robbers, who was held at the scene.
