Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul captured his 26thfive-wicket haul at this level to leave four-times defending champions Guyana Jaguars in sight of their second consecutive victory of this season’s Regional Four-Day contest against Leeward Hurricanes at the end of the penultimate day of their second round contest yesterday at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium at North Sound, Antigua.
After bowing out the Jaguars for 289 from their overnight position of 215-5, the host ended the on 130-7 leading by just 23 as they head into today’s final day to leave the Jaguars in a strong position to extend their unbeaten streak in First-Class cricket to 12.
Rakeem Cornwall reached the boundary three times in his 38, while Keacy Carty hit three fours in 23.
But only Jeremiah Louis (18) and Alzarri Joseph (15) of the other batsmen reached 15 as their frustrating unfinished eight-wicket stand has so far produced 25 runs from 7.5 overs to leave the Hurricanes in danger of an early defeat today.
The 29–year-old Permaul has so far captured 5-49 from 25 overs, while Romario Shepherd and Gudakesh Motie has a wicket each.
Permaul started the slide by removing openers Montcin Hodge (15) and Carty after they had given their team a good foundation with their 40-run stand.
Carty was caught by Tagenarine Chanderpaul while seven runs later Hodge edged Permaul to Skipper Leon Johnson at slip and the Hurricanes never really recovered as they lost wickets at regular intervals although Cornwall offered token resistance and along with Orlando Peters (8) added 22 for the fifth wicket.
But once Cornwall was trapped LBW by Permaul at 105-7 the Jaguars were large and in charge as they blew away the Hurricane’s middle order.
Louis and Alzarri Joseph joined forces and showed fight to take their side to the close without further loss.
Earlier, Jaguars lost their last five wickets for just 43 runs as the burly Antiguan Cornwall showed once again why he is widely regarded as the best off-spinner in the Region by finishing with 4-48 from 29 overs.
Overnight batsmen Anthony Bramble and Vishal Singh pushed the score to 246 before Bramble (25) was removed by pacer Sheno Berridge who had 2-53.
When 10 away for 10thcentury at this level, the 29-year-old left-handed Singh was dismissed by Cornwall at 255-7 after facing 209 balls and reaching the boundary nine times.
Permaul (1) was run out at 267-8 before Motie (0) charged Cornwall with Shepherd batting well at the other end and was taken in the deep at 285 before Shepherd who made 18 from 77 balls with two fours, backed away and had his stumps scattered to give Joseph his only wicket of the innings.
Scores: At the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground: Hurricanes lead by 23 runs with three second innings wickets intact.
LEEWARD ISLANDS HURRICANES 182 (Devon Thomas 58, Montcin Hodge 50, Keacy Carty 28; Romario Shepherd 4-36, Gudakesh Motie 3-23) and 130 for seven (Rahkeem Cornwall 27, Keacy Carty 23; Veerasammy Permaul 5-49).
