Yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, 27-year-old Casey Chapman, a taxi driver, of 77 South Sophia appeared before Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer and denied the robbery charge.
It was alleged that Chapman, on May 27, last, at Tucville, Georgetown, in the company of another, and armed with a gun, robbed Rashee Pasha of one Toyota Premio PPP5358, one LG phone valued $40,000; one gold chain valued $200,000 and $20,000 in cash.
Through his attorney, the court learnt that Chapman who has a baby on the way was charged in July for a robbery and was released on $200,000 bail. Just last week he was charged for possession of firearm and ammunition.
According to the attorney in an application for bail, Chapman is the sole provider for his mother and grandmother. He further stated that Chapman is always in full view of the public and he does not have any problem with anyone.
However, police prosecution objected to bail based on the prevalence of the offence to society and the fact that a gun was used in the act.
Moreover, Chapman was positively identified by the virtual complainant. It was also stated that the vehicle was found in his possession when he was arrested.
Police prosecution also based its objection on the fact that the offense is of serious nature and Chapman may not be attending court if bail is granted.
After listening to the prosecution Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer denied bail . She took note of the fact that Chapman has similar matters in court. She ordered him to return to court on January 25, 2019.
Chapman, Sheldon Andrews and Adam McDonald, were charged last Friday for a series of firearm, ammunition and armed robbery offences. The first allegation against the men stated that on November 26, last, at High and Princes Streets, while being in the company of each other, they had in their possession one .32 Taurus pistol without being holders of firearm licences.
The second charge stated that on the same day and at the same location, the men had in their possession one 9 mm Glock pistol without being holders of firearm licenses. It was further alleged that on the same day and at the same location they had in their possession 12 live rounds of 9 mm ammunition without being holders of firearm licenses.
The last charge against the trio stated that on the same day and at the same location, they had in their possession seven .32 ammunition when they were not licensed firearm holders.
Chapman also had an individual charge which alleged that on July 5, 2017, at Grove, Access Road, East Bank Demerara, while being in the company of another and armed with a gun, he robbed Marcia Maria Martin of a cellular phone worth $70,000, four ounces raw gold worth $600,000, some $700,000 in cash and other articles totalling $1.4 M, property of Martin.
The men all denied the allegations after they were read to them by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. They were instructed to make their next court appearance on December 12, 2018.
