The residents of Matthew’s Ridge, Region One, on Saturday had their power restored to the community.
This was after more than a week of outages following the theft of parts from the power generators.
According to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure yesterday, due to the diligence and hard work of police officers at Matthew’s Ridge, the stolen turbocharger was recovered and electricity was restored to the community.
In addition, the ministry said, the Power Station Operator who was fingered was convicted and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
“The Ministry of Public Infrastructure along with the Hinterland Electrification Company Incorporation, would like to thank the Police Officers at Matthew’s Ridge for their successful investigation and diligence in ensuring the stolen turbocharger was recovered.”
There was anger in that hinterland community last week after residents complained of constant power outages as a result of the theft of a turbocharger from a generator.
The Ministry disclosed that it has received a report from the Hinterland Electrification Company Inc., an agency within the Ministry which indicated that a turbocharger from the generator at Matthew’s Ridge was stolen.
According to reports, two weekends ago the mechanical engineer conducted maintenance work on the generators. He observed that several parts were missing from the 156VA Cummins generator.
An investigation was immediately launched at the power station to find the missing equipment.
From this investigation, it was discovered that the Station Operator allegedly confessed that he had removed the turbocharger from the generator and sold it to a miner.
The Station Operator was arrested.
