A shopkeeper is to remain on remand after he was charged for possession of narcotics and attempting to obstruct the course of justice by bribing a police officer.
Christopher Gonsalves, 27, of 291 Independence Boulevard, who appeared for the third time at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday, was charged on October 9, last. Gonsalves had pleaded not guilty to the two charges which alleged that on October 3, last, at Punt Trench, Albouystown, he had in his possession 530 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
It was also alleged that on the said date at Brickdam Police Station, Gonsalves wilfully attempted to obstruct or pervert the course of justice by offering $150,000 to police Sergeant George in order to prevent the institution of charges against him.
Gonsalves was represented by attorney-at-law Paul Fung-a-fat, who in his application for bail yesterday, informed the court that Gonsalves suffers from Tuberculosis. The attorney pleaded that it is difficult to speak to his client, because for the month he has been on remand, Gonsalves is not getting proper medical attention.
Police prosecution yesterday lacked the analyst report to proceed with the matter, which resulted in Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman once again refusing bail and instructing that Gonsalves return to court on November 26.
The Court had learnt that on the day in question, acting on information, an undercover police rank approached Gonsalves and inquired about purchasing marijuana. Gonsalves allegedly then rode away and came back with a black bag containing leaves and stems of the marijuana plant. The rank then identified himself, alerted other ranks, and Gonsalves was arrested.
At the police station, Gonsalves requested to see the sergeant. Upon meeting Sergeant George, he then offered $150,000 to the sergeant with the request that no charges be instituted against him. Sergeant George collected the money before telling Gonsalves of the charge. The money was lodged and Gonsalves remained in police custody.
