Wheelchair user perishes as fire destroys home

A one-storey wooden house on the squatting area in Freeman Street, East La Penitence was yesterday destroyed by fire, which also claimed the life of one person suspected to be the owner of the house, Arlene Moses, a 48-year-old wheelchair user with one leg.
According to nearby residents, smoke was seen billowing from the building at around 13:15 hrs. The residents were in the south eastern section of the house closest to the woman’s grocery shop. They said that they soon realized that the house was on fire, and a call was made to the fire station.
This publication was told that the woman lives with her nephew and would operate a grocery business. Persons gathered at the scene related little about the woman as she did not have many friends or acquaintances. Other than her nephew, she was known to have had a male friend identified as Paul, and her father who would visit her occasionally.
The woman’s nephew, Dillon Moore said that he left his aunt at home at around 08:15 hrs yesterday to go to work. The young man said that around 2 o’clock, he was at work when he received a call from his cousin telling him that a house was on fire in the area, and that he suspected it to be that of his aunt. Upon arriving at the scene, his worst fears were confirmed.
It took approximately two hours for firefighters to completely extinguish the blaze and to locate the missing woman’s body. Two neighbouring houses sustained minimal damage.
The fire services have not yet been able to determine the cause of the fire.
