‘Express your energy’ activity targets Region Two primary schools

The Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) in recognition of CARICOM Energy Month (CEM) hosted an activity for students of grades five and six of region two primary schools under the theme ‘Express your Energy’ last Friday.
The event took place at Cotton Field Secondary School.
Six schools, selected by the Regional Education Office, participated in the activity, with students hailing from 8th of May Primary, Sparta Primary, CV Nunes Primary, Taymouth Manor Primary, Queenstown Primary and Suddie Primary.
The non-competitive activity tasked students with the completion of energy-themed word searches, listing of energy conservation measures and using art to depict renewable energy sources. Students were called upon to put their creativity into use, as the main aim of the theme –‘Express your Energy’ is to tap into the imaginations of future energy champions.
GEA’s energy month 2018 is targeting children by giving them an avenue to share their ideas and voice their opinions on energy related matters in a non-competitive environment.
District Education Officer for the primary level, Shondelle Hercules, in giving remarks on behalf of the Regional Education Officer, Nicola Matthews, expressed gratitude to GEA for hosting the event in region two.
“Our Office appreciates this timely initiative which was educational and presented in a fun format which both students and teachers enjoyed…The activities that were done can be integrated into our school’s curriculum,” Hercules said.
Primary Officer, Natram Doobay explained that while the activity focused on energy, the tasks assigned demonstrated extensive curriculum integration. He added that the students were exposed to subject areas that were usually covered in the classroom – with the activities encompassing Social Studies, Grammar, Science, and Art, and even assisting them with creative writing.
The initiative, which was initially started in 2012, is a collaborative effort between the GEA and the Hinterland Electrification Company (HECI) through the IDB Public Awareness Project – a project which has sought to promote the benefits of renewable energy technologies and the rational use of energy.
In keeping with the promotion of sustainable energy development, CARICOM Energy Month 2018 is being celebrated under the theme “Clean Energy, Good Governance and Regulation: Generating Growth and Resilience”.
