Low turnout for discipline forces should send strong message to the APNU- Ramson

“The writing is on the wall,” said former Member of Parliament, Charles Ramson yesterday as he predicted the downfall of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) first at the Local Government Elections, then General and Regional.
The writing to which Ramson referred is the fact that members of the discipline forces—police, solider and prison guards—did not turn out in their numbers to vote.
Ramson, an attorney at law, said, “It is well known that the disciplined service usually supports the PNC (People’s National Congress Reform) which means they support the APNU so the fact that less than half of those in the joint services turned out to vote, sends a clear message that PNC’s support base is dwindling.”
Ramson recalled that only 39.7 percent of the 7,917 soldiers, police and prison guards on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) official voters’ list for Local Government Elections (LGE) actually cast their votes.
Ramson said, “Just imagine, of the 4,693 members of the Guyana Police Force, only 1,938 cast votes. The President was a soldier and not even half of those on the list voted. Only 1,022 of the 2,773 soldiers voted while, just 187 of 451 turned out. This sends a clear message.”
Ramson continued, “The low turnout is an indication of the confidence that the discipline services have in the APNU administration and mind you, the President is the Commander-In- Chief.”
Ramson noted that the turnout is even lower than in the 2016 Local Government Election.
At the last Local Government Election (2016,) 55.6 percent of the disciplined service members cast their votes.
In 2016, Chief Election Officer Keith Lowenfield said that 55.6 percent of the disciplined service members cast their votes compared with the estimated 76 percent at least year’s general elections.
However, the figure is higher than the 40 percent estimated by the groups contesting in Georgetown.
