A number of youths living on the Essequibo Coast can now proudly say that they are computer literate, after graduating from a free computer course last Friday, which was organized by the Ministry of Social Protection.
The two weeks training programme, which was hosted at the Queenstown Primary School, was facilitated by Global Technology, through the Ministry of Social Protection’s Department of Youth and Sport. The programme which catered for more than 45 individuals from primarily Good Hope and Queenstown was centered on providing a foundation package.
This programme package provides individuals with the basic computer knowledge and is best suited for new computer users. According to the Programme facilitator Ms. Phillipa Valley, the foundation package includes an introduction to Microsoft Word, Excel, the use of the internet and emailing.
According to Ms. Valley, over the past weeks, persons attending the class were trained on the various modules. As was explained to this publication, at the end of every module, persons were assessed and given a test, in which they were graded according to their performance. Valley added, “The grades ranged from ‘A’ to ‘C’… those who didn’t make it received a certificate of training with the hope that in the future, they can come to the Centre in Georgetown where they can receive training and be re-tested.”
According to Ms. Valley, most of the persons who attended the class were successful in being graded from grade ‘A’ to ‘C’. Commenting on the performance of the class, she added, “One student received in all her modules, Grade A. The majority got B with a few receiving C grades… From the Good Hope area we had about six students receiving a ‘C’ grade in one module or another. For example, in the Excel programme, some of them received a C grade.”
Kaieteur News understands that the programme also included some 30 grade six students from the Queenstown Primary school. These students were not offered a certificate since they were inadequately trained. This publication understands that the certificates offered by Global Technology are accredited, and can be used for various employment opportunities.
