Benefits of oil already pouring in

Over the last week, we learnt that the American Chamber of Commerce has set up a branch in Guyana; American Airlines will soon be serving the country and a delegation of US Congressmen is set to arrive for what Minister of State, Joseph Harmon has described as a “familiarization visit”.
I think we all can agree that without the discovery of massive oil reserves by ExxonMobil and imminent production, none of the above would’ve occurred, at least not anytime soon.
What this tells us is that the global spotlight is now on Guyana. The interest from a number of groups is growing rapidly and will give rise to new foreign direct investments, stronger bilateral relations and secure the country’s place as a respected player on the world stage.
The arrival of American Airlines and the establishment of an American Chamber branch in Guyana may have been the two most significant events so far for the year as it relates to business and investment. The ease of travel American Airlines will bring and the network of investors the American Chamber will open up for Guyana will have a long-lasting impact on industry in the country.
At a time when the threat to our sovereignty from an unstable Venezuela is at an all-time high, the visit of a team of US Congressmen sends a solid message as to who Guyana is building stronger relations with. The fact that the largest US Corporation is operating off our shores is also a clear indication that US interest in Guyana is high and any aggressive move by Venezuela will not go unnoticed.
We have only now begun to scratch the surface regarding the opportunities that will come to Guyana as a result of oil production. In the coming decades, the billions of dollars in revenue from oil will be just one part of the story. The other part will be the untold spin-off effects of this industry and how it will serve to transform Guyana.
