Mr. Editor,
The average Guyanese does not know this Minister named Simona Charles-Broomes. She passes as a kind and caring Minister always looking out for the have nots in this nation. But truth be told, she is always fighting for the underdogs. It is a constant battle because nothing happens in this country without a fight. This has moulded Minister Broomes into one of the fiercest fighters Guyana has produced.
She has fought many battles in this country, starting as a teenager when she fought men in the mining industry to make a living as a woman. Whether it is a security guard holding a rifle or a cougar in the jungle, Minister Broomes has always stood up for her rights and fought against what she believes to be wrong.
She fought for gold miners against the PPP government, leading a demonstration that shut down Bartica in 2010. She protested against the 2011 disputed election results and was in the demonstrations when police opened fire on protesters. She joined the fight in Linden when the police fired on protesters in 2012; she led a team of supporters from Georgetown to feed and refresh the protesters who blocked the road into Linden.
She fought for women and children in the mining industry, she fought against human trafficking; she fought against the misdeeds of the PPP government and she has constantly been fighting as a member of this Government for the Guyanese workers, human rights, small miners, exploited and abused women, etc.etc.
This little spat with those security officers is just an example of the kind of woman and leader the Minister is. The security guards made the mistake of putting the obstacle in the path of the Minister’s vehicle, an error that could be forgiven if they had ‘stand down’ when they realized it was a government official. Instead they persisted.
Well the Minister came out, represented herself and the rest is in dispute. I for one love that; it makes me proud to be a Guyanese woman. We need women to stand up to these men and demand to be treated with respect.
I wish Guyana had more leaders like Minister Broomes. The world, our neighbours and our men would be forced to treat this nation and its people, especially its women with respect.
Thanks
Mrs. Jones
