A former member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Friday got off lightly when City Magistrate Annette Singh gave him a suspended sentence for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Kwasie Maloney was on trial before Magistrate Singh in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts since last October.
According to the charge, on October 12 last at the route 44 minibus park, Maloney had in his possession, a .9mm pistol when he was not a licensed firearm holder.
It was further alleged, that on the same day in question, he had in his possession 19 rounds of ammunition along with a component of a spent shell.
He had denied both charges.
At the commencement of the trial, Attorney-at-law, Dexter Todd, argued that the witness’ evidence were whimsical and lacked common sense.
However, the attorney subsequently advised the defendant to change his plea to guilty. The lawyer then made a plea of mitigation seeking the Court’s discretion in sentencing his client.
He told the court that there are a number of special reasons, which ought to move the court to hand down a suspended sentence.
The court having accepted the plea in mitigation granted a two years’ suspended sentence with a fine of $60,000.
At the conclusion of the trial in relation to unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition, the Magistrate instructed the defendant to attend counselling, which will be conducted by a probation officer.
According to reports, on the day in question, police officers conducted a search of the defendant and found the articles.
