Teheran Proclamation, a conference’s outcome document, clearly expressed: “Parents have a basic human right to determine freely and responsibly the number and spacing of their children”.
Under the theme: “Family Planning is a Human Right”, 2018 World Population Day imprints the 50th anniversary of the 1968 International Conference of Human Rights, whereby, for the first time, family planning was globally declared to be a human right.
In 1989, the then-Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme established World Population Day. The legislative language which was implanted was a game-changing realization for both women and girls.
They both had a right to avoid the exhaustion, depletion and danger of too many pregnancies, too close together. This also gave a right to both men and women who have the opportunity to make their own decisions to choose when and how often they can embrace parenthood. Every individual has the human right to determine the direction and scope of his or her future in this fundamental way.
It is important for a family to understand the basic human right that must be upheld when making a family plan. There are standards that can suite and change the mind-set of a family. This includes Family Planning information and services that cannot be restricted on the basis of diversity; this shows a great effect on non-discrimination.
A country shows a great impact towards family planning therefore, countries must ensure that family planning commodities and services are accessible and available to everyone. They also have a duty to ensure the active and informed participation of individuals in decisions that affect them, including health issues.
Systems that are in placed such as health, education, leaders and policymakers must be accountable to the people they serve in all efforts to realize the human right to family planning.
Services and information must be given in a distinguish manner pertaining to contraceptives. It should be accepted and respected by both modern medical ethics and the cultures of those being accommodated.
Family planning information should be of good quality, which relates to a clear understanding of communication and scientifically accurate. Every person must be empowered to make reproductive choices with full autonomy, free of pressure, coercion or misrepresentation.
Not forgetting privacy and confidentiality are utmost important. This gives individuals the right to enjoy their privacy when seeking family planning information and services.
